The portrait of Cho Yongbok, handed down through his descendants, has
two versions. One is a full-length portrait of a seated image in an official
uniform wearing a square-shaped cap. The version in a normal outfit has
the title of the portrait on the upper left corner, which provides a clue
to the history of the portrait. According to this, it was drawn when he
was 54, while he was exiled in Yongchun. But, as Cho Yongbok was released
and returned to the court, he had a painter draw a separate version in
official uniform and he drew the version in the outfit of exile with his
own hand. Therefore, these two versions display almost the same style,
except that the version in the exile outfit exposes both hands, which
is rare in portraits of the Choson period. |
